Double Chocolate Chip Spring Tie-Dye Cookies

It's Recipe Sunday (AKA my favorite day of the week)! And I am so excited about this new recipe! I was inspired this week by colors. I've never seen this done before nor have I ever seen this sold in bakeries so I the excitement level of just me thinking up this recipe made me giddy. I love finding creative ways to add colors into what would normally be brown or tan bakes. And the challenge I gave myself was trying to add color without adding sprinkles because not everyone likes the crunch or addition of sprinkles to cookies or cupcakes.  I knew I wanted to use white chocolate chips because I love the flavor and the best vehicle for that is my chocolate chip cookie recipe. And to make it more than just a white chocolate chip recipe, I had to add some milk chocolate chips too.

I didn't know 100% how the coloring would turn out because of the light brown sugar in the recipe but I'm so happy that
the color stayed! I chose to go with Springy colors since it feels so good outside here in Chicago. I wanted to keep that feeling and mirror it in my baked good this weekend. However, the original plan was to do the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple) but since I didn't know how the colors would turn out, I decided to just do four. And I'm so happy about how beautiful this cookies turned out, I couldn't wait to type up this blog post to share this creation with everyone.

I don't usually say this about my baked goods but I'm pretty proud of myself for this one! And I'm so unbelievably excited to share it!

Double Chocolate Chip Spring Tie-Dye Cookies

Ingredients:

  1. 2 sticks of butter, melted
  2. 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  3. 1 cup granulated sugar
  4. 3 cups all purpose flour
  5. 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
  6. 1 teaspoon salt
  7. 1 teaspoon baking soda
  8. 2 large eggs
  9. 1 cup white chocolate chips
  10. 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  11. Pastel green, blue, pink, and yellow gel food coloring**

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350. Line one large baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. In a microwave safe bowl, melt the two sticks of butter. Let cool.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, and melted butter.
  4. Once the butter and sugars are combined, add the vanilla extract and eggs. Mix to combine.
  5. Add the salt, baking soda, and flour. Stir until everything is combined. The dough will be sticky.
  6. Split the dough into four equal parts (will need three more bowls). Each bowl will be a different color. Put four drops of the different gel food coloring in each bowl. Using hands or spoons, mix the coloring into the dough.
  7. Once the dough it dyed, add white chocolate chips and semi-sweet chocolate chips. These don't have to be evenly dispersed in the different colors.
  8. Take a long piece of cling wrap and spread it out on a table or counter. Take the green dyed dough and spread it out on the cling wrap. Then the pink, the blue, and the yellow. Once all four colors are next to each other on the cling wrap, take the side with the green dough and roll it over so it touches the yellow. All four colors should be touching and in a log shape.
  9. Put log of dough in fridge for 30 minutes.
  10. Once chilled, using a butter knife, cut slices of the dough and place on a baking tray. All four colors will show when placed on baking tray. Bake for 15 minutes. The cookies will be just done and soft and chewy in the middle.
  11. Let chill on the baking tray for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
**I used the pastel, Spring colors but you can use any four colors your heart desires. It will still make a fun tie-dyed cookie!**

Other than the creative and beautiful cookies it produces, this recipe is super easy and versatile. If you don't like chocolate chips, that's okay. Add in whatever flavor you want to this recipe and it will still produce a batch of soft, chewy, and delicious cookies. That's why I love this recipe of mine. I can be creative in many ways but especially with the flavors. And I think that's what makes a successful cookie recipe. If you can take a simple recipe and completely make it your own, make it something that resembles your personality, then you made a great cookie. Inspiration hits you at weird times and I hope this cookie recipe inspires someone to go out of their comfort zone and experiment too!

What should I bake next?
